The Spandau Citadel, one of Europe's most impressive and best-preserved High Renaissance fortresses, stands in the Berlin district of Haselhorst. This historic structure, built on the site of a medieval castle, is an outstanding testament to the art of fortress construction of its time and is one of the best-known sights in the Spandau district.

History+

Construction of the Spandau Citadel began in 1559 and was completed in 1594. Replacing an older medieval castle, under the direction of Italian architects Francesco Chiaramella de Gandino and later Rochus Graf zu Lynar, a symmetrical fortress with four bastions was created, offering no blind spots for attackers. In 1806, the fortress surrendered to Napoleonic troops but was besieged and recaptured by Prussian artillery in 1813. In the 20th century, the citadel temporarily served as a location for schools and an army gas protection laboratory. After World War II, it was occupied by Soviet and later British forces. Since 1992, it has housed the Spandau City History Museum.
