Cyriaksburg Fortress

The origins of Cyriaksburg date back to the 12th century, when the Cyriakskloster (Cyriak Monastery) stood on the same site. This was later demolished to make way for the city fortress of Cyriaksburg, constructed between 1480 and 1604. Its purpose was to strengthen Erfurt's western defenses and secure the important trade routes to Gotha and Nordhausen. During the Thirty Years' War, the complex was expanded into a citadel under Gustav II Adolf of Sweden and served as a strategic base for Swedish troops. After the conquest of Erfurt by Electoral Mainz and French forces in 1664, the citadel underwent modernization under Elector Johann Philipp von Schönborn but lost significance with the construction of the Petersberg Citadel. In the early 19th century, it was briefly occupied by Prussian and French troops. Following the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Cyriaksburg returned to Prussia, was expanded between 1824 and 1830 according to the New Prussian system, and used militarily until the founding of the German Empire in 1871. From 1873, large parts of the fortress were demolished, but the buildings continued to serve as troop accommodation until the end of World War I. In 1919, the city of Erfurt acquired Cyriaksberg and transformed the area, including the citadel, into a garden park. After World War II, horticultural exhibitions were held here, leading to the creation of today's egapark Erfurt. Since 1995, the fortress has undergone extensive renovations.

The Cyriaksburg Citadel is located in Erfurt, the capital of Thuringia, on Cyriaksberg Hill at an elevation of approximately 238 m above sea level.

Today, the Cyriaksburg Citadel is accessible to visitors and houses a museum. It is part of the egapark Erfurt and offers insights into its eventful history.
