Marienstatt Abbey

The Cistercian Monastery of Marienstatt, a significant cultural monument in Germany, is located in the Westerwald district of Rhineland-Palatinate. This historic abbey, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, is distinguished by its long history and picturesque setting.
History+
The monastery of Marienstatt was founded in 1212, with initial construction beginning at its original site in Neunkhausen. By 1215, Archbishop Dietrich of Trier had confirmed its foundation, and the convent under Abbot Hermann of Marienstatt moved from Heisterbach. Due to land disputes and unfavorable agricultural conditions at the first location, Abbot Hermann requested a relocation in 1220. In 1222, Count Heinrich III of Sayn and his wife Mechthild of Landsberg gifted the community the lordship of Nistria in the Nister valley. The final relocation to the current site occurred with the first church consecration on December 27, 1227, under the third Abbot Conrad. This move also resulted in a change of diocesan affiliation, placing the monastery under the Archbishop of Cologne. From early on, Marienstatt enjoyed the protection of the Roman Curia, evidenced by several papal protection privileges.
