Langheim Abbey

The monastery of Langheim was founded in 1132 as a daughter monastery of Ebrach, initiated by Bishop Otto I of Bamberg and supported by three Bamberg ministerials. In the 13th and 14th centuries, Langheim became one of the wealthiest monasteries in the Nordgau thanks to extensive donations of land and villages. Around 1380, it faced economic difficulties, leading to the sale of some land to the Diocese of Bamberg. Efforts to achieve imperial immediacy were unsuccessful and ceased in 1741. Between 1680 and 1792, during the Counter-Reformation, the monastery was transformed into a magnificent Baroque complex, designed by renowned architects such as Johann Leonhard Dientzenhofer, Gottfried Heinrich Krohne, Balthasar Neumann, and Lorenz Fink. The administrative courts in Tambach, Kulmbach, and Trieb were also renovated in Baroque style. Balthasar Neumann also planned the pilgrimage church of Vierzehnheiligen for the monastery. A major fire in May 1802 destroyed parts of the complex. In the course of secularization in 1803, the monastery was dissolved, its possessions sold, and damaged buildings demolished. The oldest surviving structure is the former St. Catherine's Chapel from 1220, once a gate chapel and later a barn. The Sepulchre Chapel from 1624 was rededicated as the filial church of St. Maria, Petrus, and Bernhard.

Langheim Monastery is situated in Klosterlangheim, a district of Lichtenfels in Upper Franconia, Bavaria, at an elevation of approximately 312 meters above sea level.

Today, only the remaining buildings of the former abbey can be found in the center of Klosterlangheim. These are listed as historical monuments and bear witness to the monastery's former grandeur and significance.
