Kloster Gotteszell

The monastery of Gotteszell was founded in 1285. It was established as a Cistercian monastery and dedicated to its patron saints, Mary and Anna. Over the centuries, the monastery developed into an important place of devotion and spiritual life. After a period of flourishing, during which sciences and arts were promoted, it experienced setbacks in the 17th century due to wars and fires. Nevertheless, the abbey recovered and experienced a renewed period of splendor in the 18th century, when the collegiate church was magnificently adorned. In the course of secularization, the monastery was dissolved in 1803.

The former monastery of Gotteszell is located in Bavaria, Germany. It is situated in the municipality of Gotteszell in the Bavarian Forest.

The former abbey church now serves as the parish church of St. Anna and is an impressive example of late medieval and Baroque architecture. Parts of the original monastery buildings have been preserved, bearing witness to the former grandeur of the complex. The church houses artworks, including a choir fresco by Cosmas Damian Asam depicting the Assumption of Mary.
