The Cistercian Monastery Doberan, a former monastery in Rostock, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, is a significant monument in the region. Its monastery church, the Doberan Minster, is considered one of Europe's most important High Gothic brick buildings.
History+
The Doberan Monastery was founded in 1186. It was inhabited by Cistercian monks and developed into an influential spiritual, political, and economic center. The monastery was dedicated to Saints Mary, John the Baptist, and John the Evangelist. It also served as a burial site for the Principality of Mecklenburg. In 1552, the monastery was dissolved as part of the secularization.
