The monastery of Dargun was founded in 1172, established as a Cistercian abbey. For centuries, the order shaped the spiritual and economic life of the surrounding area. The monastic complex was under the patronage of Saint Mary. In the course of the Reformation, Dargun Monastery was secularized in 1552 and thus dissolved as an ecclesiastical institution, marking a turning point in its long history.
