Kloster Thron

The origins of Thron Convent date back to before 1163. It was founded in 1243 by Count Gerhard von Dietz, with a imperial fief called Niedernhain forming its basis. The official incorporation into the Cistercian Order occurred in 1251, with Arnsburg Abbey serving as the superior institution. In 1262, the convent church was consecrated, marking the completion of a construction phase that began around 1244. Dedicated to Mary, John the Evangelist, and Catherine, the convent primarily housed noble nuns and, at its peak around 1320, had approximately 60 residents. A decline began in the 15th century, exacerbated by financial difficulties and the Reformation. With the introduction of the Lutheran faith in the region from 1528, it became increasingly difficult for the convent to find Catholic priests. The last abbess, Margarete von Hattstein, passed away in 1576, bringing an end to the history of Thron Convent as a religious institution. The dissolution of the convent officially took place in 1570.

The former Cistercian convent of Thron is located in the Hochtaunus, a low mountain range region in Hesse, Germany, near the municipality of Wehrheim.

The former monastic complex is now operated as a farm estate. Both the entire current farm complex and the former convent mill are listed as cultural monuments.
