St. Katharina

The former Cistercian convent of St. Katharinen in Rhineland-Palatinate, near Neuwied, is a significant cultural monument. Of the original monastic complex, only the church remains today, which has a turbulent history and forms the center of the present-day municipality of Sankt Katharinen.
History+
The origins of the convent date back to around 1200, when a canonesses' foundation existed on this site, which was destroyed by fire in 1201. In the following years, the complex was rebuilt, with the church likely completed by 1208. A donation by Knight Gudulph von Hammerstein in 1230 confirms the existence of the convent. A foundation charter from 1257, dated to 1238, allowed for its expansion into a Cistercian convent. In 1261, Archbishop Heinrich II of Trier claimed diocesan rights over the convent, which was confirmed by Pope Nicholas III in 1277. From 1281, the convent was under the supervision of Himmerod Abbey. Extensive new constructions and renovations took place in the early 14th century, financed by indulgences. Further construction work is documented for the 15th century. During the Thirty Years' War, the convent was burned down by Swedish troops in 1631. The church was rebuilt in 1638, with the nave significantly extended. The secularization ended the monastic era on August 31, 1803, and the buildings became the property of the Prince of Nassau-Usingen. The convent church was later elevated to a parish church, while the convent buildings were demolished.
