Kloster St. Jacobi

As early as the 12th century, a chapel dedicated to the Apostle James the Elder existed on this site. In 1217, Otto IV granted the chapel his protection and transferred it to a brotherhood. A women's community was first documented in 1233, supported by a Kaland. Ambrosius served as the first provost of the Cistercian convent. In the 14th century, the monastery received an annuity from Johannes II Hake. In the middle of the 15th century, under Abbess Gertrud from Derneburg, Albrecht II of Brunswick-Grubenhagen had the dilapidated buildings renovated. In the mid-16th century, the abbey was dissolved. Duke Ernst III had the monastery buildings converted into a castle, which later served as an administrative office. Parts of the original complex were demolished in the late 19th century.

The former monastery is located in Osterode am Harz, a town in the Lower Saxony region of Germany.

The preserved south wing of the former monastery complex now houses the Osterode am Harz District Court. The north wing forms the former monastery church, now known as St. Jacobi Palace Church, which received its current appearance around 1750. Inside, a early Baroque altar with Gothic figures, the pulpit, the choir stalls, and the Hartzing epitaph are noteworthy. The organ dates back to Johann Andreas Engelhardt.
