The monastery of Schale was founded in 1278. It was established as a Cistercian convent and existed until its dissolution during the Reformation. In 1535, the monastery was secularized, marking the end of its function as a spiritual institution. The original monastery buildings were presumably destroyed during the Thirty Years' War.
