The former Cistercian nunnery of Naundorf, located in the Mansfeld-Südharz region of Saxony-Anhalt, stands as a remarkable testament to medieval monastic culture. Although the convent no longer exists today, one preserved building bears witness to its former significance and the life of the nuns according to the strict rules of the Cistercian order.
History+
The foundation of Naundorf Abbey took place around 1250 by the Counts of Querfurt. It was established as a nunnery following the Cistercian rule and was under the supervision of Walkenried Abbey. A provost represented the convent's interests externally. In 1525, the monastery suffered looting during the Peasants' War, after which the sisters sought refuge in Marienkammer Abbey. The official dissolution of the convent occurred in 1531, and Abbess Sophia von Schafstädt transferred to Kölleda Abbey.
