The origins of Marienbrunn Abbey date back to 1233, when the wealthy widow Guderadis of Hartmann von Geyr donated lands for the establishment of a monastery. In 1236, the convent was founded and dedicated to Saint Mary. Some of the nuns and assets came from the Cologne convent of Mariengarten, with Marienbrunn established as an independent foundation under the supervision of Kamp Abbey. Over the centuries, Marienbrunn developed into one of the wealthiest landowners in the region. The convent possessed a sophisticated water supply system with mills and engaged in extensive agriculture and livestock farming. In the course of secularization, the convent was dissolved in 1802.
