Kloster Machern

Kloster Machern

Monastery brewery, brewpub, wine cellar, museum

The former Cistercian convent of Machern, a significant cultural monument in Germany, is picturesquely situated on the left bank of the Moselle, opposite the village of Zeltingen-Rachtig. It is located in the Wehlen district of Bernkastel-Kues, approximately five kilometers northwest of the city of Bernkastel-Kues. Today, the convent complex is a popular excursion destination on the Middle Moselle, combining historical substance with modern use.

History+

The origins of the site date back to 1084, when Benedictine nuns from the Irminenkloster in Trier established a settlement here, which was, however, dissolved in the early 12th century. Around 1230, it was re-established as a noble Cistercian convent under the supervision of Himmerod Abbey. Extensive new construction of the complex began around 1240, and the convent church of St. Maria was consecrated in 1262. Over the centuries, Machern, favored by its location on the Moselle and extensive lands, developed into a center of viticulture. Donations and privileges, such as the patronage rights of the church in Löf and the right to serve wine, contributed to its prosperity. After setbacks due to the plague in the 16th century and the destruction of the Thirty Years' War, the convent experienced a revival under abbesses such as Maria von Metternich and Maria Ursula von Metternich. The latter initiated a fundamental reconstruction in the Baroque style from 1688, completed by 1700, which shaped its current appearance. In the 18th century, a gradual decline set in, ending in 1802 with secularization by the French government. The buildings were subsequently used for agricultural purposes and fell into disrepair until extensive restoration work began in 1970.

Location+

Machern Abbey is located in the Bernkastel-Wittlich region of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 116 meters above sea level.
