The former Cistercian nunnery of Kelbra in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, was a significant spiritual center in the Mansfeld-Südharz region. From its foundation in the 13th century until its dissolution during the Reformation, it shaped the religious and cultural life of the area.
History+
The nunnery in Kelbra was founded in 1251 by Count Heinrich III of Beichlingen-Rothenburg. This institution belonged to the Cistercian order. The monastery, dedicated to Saint George, existed for several centuries. In 1525, the nuns were expelled by rebellious peasants. However, they were able to return after the end of the Peasants' War. The final dissolution of the monastery occurred in 1551 as part of the Reformation. The former monastery church of St. Georgii was rebuilt after a fire in 1607. Today, only remnants of the original monastery walls remain.
