Zisterzienserinnenkloster Jüterbog

The convent was founded in 1282 by 13 nuns from the Lorenzkloster in Magdeburg, with the support of the archbishop and his ministerials. The abbey was endowed with extensive landholdings and benefited from numerous donations by the Archbishops of Magdeburg, the Bishops of Brandenburg, and citizens from Jüterbog and the surrounding area. Despite being referred to as a Cistercian convent, no direct connections to this or the Benedictine order were discernible. In the early 16th century, the economic situation and reputation of the convent deteriorated, exacerbated by the spread of Lutheran ideas. Although the convent initially remained Catholic, it likely continued its existence under the Protestant confession after 1540. By 1569, the last of the remaining sisters had passed away, after which the complex and its possessions were transferred to the Archdiocese of Magdeburg.

The convent was situated in the Dammvorstadt, west of the historic town of Jüterbog, in close proximity to the Liebfrauenkirche in Brandenburg.

Today, apart from the Liebfrauenkirche, parts of the northern cloister wing remain from the original convent complex, integrated into administrative buildings. The ensemble is protected as an architectural monument in Brandenburg and bears witness to the former significance of the convent.
