The former Cistercian convent of Höckelheim, a significant cultural monument in Lower Saxony, is located near Northeim. It is distinguished by its long history and its role in regional development.
History+
The foundation of Höckelheim convent took place in 1247, when the noble lords of Plesse transferred the church at Höckelheim to the abbess of the Cistercian nunnery of Voremberg near Hameln. Subsequently, the convent of nuns relocated to Höckelheim. The lords of Plesse used the convent as a burial site and reserved extensive sovereign and supervisory rights, including the collection of taxes and the demand for services. Duke Otto the Child donated the deserted village of Radolfshausen to the convent in 1252, although the vogtei rights were only later fully transferred to the convent. Further possessions were acquired by the convent through donations and sales from the noble lords of Plesse. In 1270, the convent was permitted to acquire Plesse hereditary estates as fiefs to ensure its economic stability. From the 14th century onwards, donations decreased, and the convent faced financial difficulties and the effects of regional feuds, which led to looting. At the beginning of the 16th century, when monastic discipline and the economic situation were precarious, the abbey loosely joined the Bursfelde reform. Despite financial burdens, the nuns founded a chapel in honor of Saint Anne in 1512. The convent was secularized in 1610.
