Frankenhausen Abbey

Frankenhausen Abbey

The former Cistercian convent of Frankenhausen, a significant cultural monument in Saxony, is located in Zwickau. It represents a testament to medieval monastic culture and is an important site for regional history.

History+

The origins of the convent lie in Grünberg, where it existed as a Cistercian nunnery from the mid-13th century, specifically before 1260. In 1276, the nuns received a ruined castle in Frankenhausen as a donation for the establishment of a new convent. The community completed its relocation by 1292. Following a fire in 1410, the complex was rebuilt. The Reformation led to the secularization of the convent in 1529, and it was finally vacated in 1543. Since 1990, the Landesverein Sächsischer Heimatschutz has successfully worked to preserve the remaining historical structures.
