History+
The foundation of Caldern Convent took place between 1238 and 1250. The precise circumstances of its establishment are not recorded, but the complex was consecrated to the Virgin Mary and Saint Nicholas. The first documented mention of the convent dates back to 1250. Landgravine Sophie of Thuringia placed the convent under her protection and donated the Nikolaikapelle, which subsequently became the convent church. Over the centuries, the convent enjoyed the support of the landgraves, who granted it lands and exemptions from taxes. From the mid-14th century, the convent experienced an economic decline. In the course of the Reformation, Caldern Convent was finally dissolved in 1527. After its dissolution, the Nikolaikirche resumed its function as a parish church. The former possessions and revenues of the convent were later transferred to Marburg University and subsequently to Giessen University.
