Zisterzienserinnenkloster Bürvenich

The origins of the Bürvenich convent date back to before 1234. It emerged from an existing community of sisters, who were supported by donations from the Counts of Jülich, particularly Wilhelm IV in 1234. As a proprietary monastery of the Counts, it was settled by nuns from the neighboring Hoven monastery. The convent was dedicated to Saints Mary, Stephen, and Urban. It existed for several centuries until it was dissolved in 1802 as part of the secularization.

The Bürvenich convent is situated in Bürvenich, a district of the town of Zülpich in the Euskirchen district, in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The complex is nestled in the rural surroundings of the region.

Of the former convent complex, the 52-meter-long church and two other convent buildings are still preserved today. Until 1837, the church served as two separate hall churches for the monastic community and the parish. These historic buildings at Stephanusstraße 55 are witnesses to the past monastic use.
