Zisterzienserinnenkloster Blatzheim

The origins of Blatzheim Abbey date back to 1240, when it was founded by Gevelsberg Abbey on the Neffelbach. Seven years later, in 1247, it was formally incorporated into the Cistercian Order, with Heisterbach Abbey serving as its immediate superior. A historical connection to the mother abbey of Gevelsberg is still evident today in the name of Gut Giffelsberg, a former grange. For the first centuries of its existence, the convent primarily served as a spiritual home for noblewomen from the Cologne and Jülich territories. It was not until the 15th century that it also opened its doors to women of bourgeois origin. The French Revolution led to the flight of the nuns in 1794 and ultimately to the dissolution of the convent in 1802. Today, only a few material traces remain, including an inscription from 1782 on a beam of the Blatzheim Obermühle, which once served as the convent's mill.

The former convent was located in Blatzheim, a district of Kerpen, within the Rhein-Erft-Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

Today, only minor traces of the former convent complex are visible, including an inscription on the former convent mill.
