The former Cistercian convent of Blankenburg, once situated in the heart of the Harz region in Saxony-Anhalt, represents a significant testament to medieval sacred architecture. Although the convent itself no longer exists, its history is closely linked to the present-day parish church of St. Bartholomew, which once served as the convent church.
History+
The origins of the convent date back to the 12th century, when a community of sisters formed around the Blankenburg castle chapel around 1199. A decisive turning point occurred in 1252 when a donation made it possible to use the current parish church of St. Bartholomew as the convent church. Initially, the Cistercian nuns shared the church with a convent of canons, but from 1305 onwards, it served exclusively the nuns. The monastic era ended in 1532 with the dissolution of the convent, after which the church resumed its function as a parish church. Today, the parish belongs to the Community of Evangelical Cistercian Heirs in Germany.
