Kloster Benninghausen

Parish church, care and support center

The former Cistercian convent of Benninghausen, located in the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Soest, was once a significant spiritual institution. Today, it is distinguished by its long history and the preserved church, which continues to serve as a parish church.

History+

The Benninghausen convent was founded in 1240 as a daughter foundation of the Gevelsberg convent and was affiliated with the Cistercian order. Spiritual oversight was provided by the abbots of Altenkamp Abbey. Initially, the convent primarily housed non-noble nuns, but from the 17th century onwards, it increasingly evolved into a noble ladies' collegiate foundation. The convent was consecrated under the patronage of Saints Mary and Martin. In 1804, the convent was dissolved as part of the secularization.
