Zisterzienserinnenkloster Ballhausen, später Großfurra

The first mention of the convent dates back to 1306. In March 1322, Landgrave Friedrich of Thuringia granted the convent of Ballhausen the patronage over the parish church of Großfurra, with the stipulation that a new monastic complex be built there. Consequently, a new convent was established at the village church of Großfurra, to which the nuns relocated in 1326. Dedicated to Saint Boniface, the convent possessed extensive landholdings in and around Ballhausen, as well as additional properties around Großfurra, which were acquired through donations in the 15th century. It maintained a close, though not incorporated, relationship with Volkenroda Abbey and was exempt from the supervision of the Archdeacon of Jechaburg. With the onset of the Reformation, the convent came under increasing pressure. Following the Peasants' War, most of the nuns left the complex, leaving only Prioress Anna Öhme and three other nuns. Despite the protection offered by Duke Georg of Saxony, the economic situation rapidly deteriorated. The dissolution of the convent was proclaimed in November 1538, and on November 21, 1538, it was converted into a state domain. A protracted legal dispute over the convent's assets lasted until 1694.

The convent was located in Großfurra, a district of Sondershausen, in the federal state of Thuringia. It is situated in the region of the Kyffhäuser Mountains in Germany.

Of the former monastic complex, only the village church of Großfurra, which once served as the convent church, remains today. The convent mill, outbuildings, and cloister buildings were demolished in the 16th and 17th centuries. Only the Boniface spring and a convent pond still bear witness to the former presence of the convent.
