Zisterzienserinnenkloster Ankuhn-Zerbst

The origins of the convent date back to 1208, when a poorhouse hospital was founded in Ankuhn, a suburb of Zerbst. Six years later, in 1214, the noblewoman Ida von Zerbst endowed a Cistercian convent. During the 1290s, the community was relocated to the city center of Zerbst, where it existed near the present-day Frauentor (Women's Gate) until its dissolution in 1542. The name of the Frauentor still commemorates the nuns who resided there. In the Ankuhn district, the partial ruin of St. Mary's Church bears witness to the original convent foundation.

The former convent area is situated in the town of Zerbst/Anhalt, which belongs to the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.

The remains of the convent, known as the Small and Large Cloister Courtyards, continue to shape the urban landscape of Zerbst. There are plans to utilize these historic buildings for municipal purposes. The partial ruin of St. Mary's Church in Ankuhn is a visible testament to the early history of the convent.
