Kloster Mariä Himmelfahrt
The former Cistercian Abbey of Kirchheim, located in Baden-Württemberg, was once a significant convent for women. From 1267 until its secularization in 1802, it shaped the religious and cultural life of the region. Today, preserved architectural elements bear witness to its long history and architectural importance.
History+
The foundation of the Mariä Himmelfahrt convent in 1267 was established by the House of Oettingen. It served as a burial site for the nobility and housed women of noble descent. The spiritual supervision of the Cistercian abbey was under the authority of Kaisheim Abbey. As a result of the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss, the monastery was dissolved in 1802 and became the property of the Princely House of Oettingen-Wallerstein.

The Gothic abbey church has been preserved to this day as the parish church of Mariä Himmelfahrt and was last renovated in 2001. A wing of the former abbey building also remains, encompassing an early Gothic collegiate chapel and the women's choir. The once extensive monastic library is now part of the University Library of Augsburg, having been integrated into the Oettingen-Wallerstein Library.
