Kloster Gevelsberg

The foundation of Gevelsberg Abbey took place between 1230 and 1236, prompted by the assassination of Archbishop Engelbert of Cologne in 1225. At the site of the murder, where miracles were soon reported, a cross and a chapel were initially erected before the new Archbishop Heinrich von Molenark supported the establishment of the monastery. The Cistercian abbey was consecrated to Saints Mary and Lawrence. Early on, the monastery developed into a pilgrimage site. During the Reformation, around 1577, the institution was converted into a secular, noble women's convent, admitting both Catholic and Protestant noblewomen. The convent was finally dissolved in 1812.

The former monastery is situated in Gevelsberg, a town in the Ennepe-Ruhr district in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

The original monastery church was demolished in 1826 due to dilapidation. Some of the former monastic buildings, including the Old Abbess's House from the 17th or 18th century and the New Abbess's House from 1805, have been preserved. In the 20th century, the buildings served as a convalescent home.
