Baierdorf Castle

The Tithe Tower likely existed as early as 1170, which the Duke had destroyed during the noble feud in 1292. In 1296, King Adolf permitted Archbishop Konrad IV to rebuild the tower. The associated dominion encompassed a village area endowed with castle-peace jurisdiction.

The first known official was Reicher von Baierdorf around 1245. Later, members of the surrounding knightly families, such as the Lobminger, Puxer, Welzer, Prankh, and Teufenbacher, appeared as officials. During the Hungarian War at the end of the 15th century, the tower became imperial, but was returned to the Archbishopric of Salzburg in 1494. From the mid-16th century, the tower was administered by stewards, who, however, resided in Thurnegg Castle.

In the mid-17th century, the Baierdorf stewardship was united with the Moosham dominion in Lungau. From 1669 to 1803, the office belonged to the Salzburg captaincy of Fohnsdorf, whose seat had been in Judenburg since 1686. On the occasion of the confiscation of ecclesiastical property in 1803, it was transformed into a state cameral dominion, merged in 1817 with the religious fund dominion of Paradeis-Judenburg, and in 1827 Baierdorf came into the possession of the Barons Seßler zu Großlobming. In 1825, Prince Johann Adolf zu Schwarzenberg bought the Tithe Tower, and in 1855, the remaining parts of the Baierdorf stewardship. The tower is still owned by the Schwarzenberg family today.
