Worms Cathedral
Worms Cathedral, also known as St. Peter's Cathedral, is a significant cathedral in the Rhineland-Palatinate city of Worms. It is considered an outstanding example of Romanesque architecture and is dedicated to Saint Peter.
History+
The foundation stone for Worms Cathedral was laid in 1181. Its construction took place during a flourishing period for the city and is closely linked to Bishop Burchard II. Construction continued until 1181, with an early Romanesque basilica being demolished and work proceeding in parallel with the new construction from 1130. Until the secularization in the early 19th century, the cathedral served as the seat of the Diocese of Worms. After the dissolution of the diocese, it became a provost church in 1862 and received the honorary title of a Basilica minor in 1925.
