Deutscher Kaiser Castle
The "Deutscher Kaiser" (German Emperor) is a late Gothic residential tower in the old town of Koblenz. Originally named "Lengenfeldsches Haus" after its builder, the building received its current name from the inn "Zum Deutschen Kaiser" that later moved in.
The residential tower was built around 1490 by Konrad von Lengenfeld († 1520), a Koblenz alderman and archiepiscopal mint master. The Lengenfeld family came from Frankfurt to Koblenz and received citizenship here in 1486. Originally, the building stood on the city wall in a row of houses on the Moselle bank next to the Kornpforte. The Anethan family was also a long-time owner. Under Elector Philipp Christoph von Sötern, Johann von Anethan was chancellor. In the 19th century, the building was converted into an inn, after which it is still named "Zum Deutschen Kaiser" today.
The residential tower escaped destruction both during the bombardments of the Siege of Koblenz in 1688 during the War of the Palatine Succession and during the air raids on Koblenz in World War II, being the only building in the otherwise completely devastated Kastorstraße in 1944. Since then, the building has stood freely.
Between 2007 and 2011, the "Deutscher Kaiser" was extensively renovated and rebuilt. To stabilize it, another building was added to the east side of the "Deutscher Kaiser". After the completion of the neighboring building, a restaurant reopened in the "Deutscher Kaiser" on April 1, 2014.

The "Deutscher Kaiser" is a tower-like, five-story late Gothic residential and commercial building. The coat of arms of the builder Konrad von Lengenfeld can be found on a keystone of the star vault in the southern part of the ground floor and in the arch frieze of the north facade. The residential tower, built of slate and tuff stone, underwent changes in the 17th, 19th, and early 20th centuries. It is the last preserved example of the tower-like stone construction of the late Middle Ages in the old town of Koblenz, which was originally typical, especially in Kastorstraße, and due to its exposed location in this area, it shapes the cityscape.
