Wilhelmitenkloster Weißenborn

The foundation of Weißenborn Monastery took place in 1253. Knights from the Slune family, who served as castellans of the nearby Scharfenburg, donated a meadow for the establishment of the first monastic settlement. This act occurred during the turbulent period of the Thuringian-Hessian War of Succession. Fifty years later, around 1301, a new site at Heiligenstein was acquired for a new monastery building. The Wilhelmites, dispatched from the Belgian monastery of Bernardfagne, operated as a mendicant order and were involved in caring for travelers and the sick. Over time, the Lords of Salza, as new lords of Scharfenburg, assumed patronage over the monastery. Despite numerous donations and permissions to grant indulgences, the monastic community faced challenges in the 14th century, including a small number of monks and complaints about fulfilling obligations associated with donations. The monastery was finally dissolved in 1536, at which point only a few elderly and sick monks remained there.

The former Wilhelmitenkloster Weißenborn was situated in Thal, a current district of Ruhla, in the Wartburgkreis in Thuringia, Germany. It was located in the middle reaches of the Erbstrom valley, at the foot of Scharfenburg Castle.

The current local parish church was once the monastery church. The original monastery building with the monks' cells was located on the site of today's Hotel Klosterschenke. The former monastery grounds also included the monastery mill and a hospital.
