Westminster Abbey
Westminster Abbey, an impressive sacred building in London, has for centuries been the traditional coronation and burial site for English and later British monarchs. This historic church is an outstanding example of Anglo-French early Gothic architecture and bears witness to a rich history closely intertwined with the British monarchy.
History+
The origins of Westminster Abbey date back to 750, when a Benedictine abbey with a monastic church stood on this site. Between 1045 and 1065, Edward the Confessor commissioned a new Romanesque building, consecrated shortly before the Norman invasion of England, which served as his final resting place. The current church began construction in 1245 under Henry III in the Anglo-French early Gothic style. While the lower part of the west facade dates from the 15th century, the distinctive main towers were only added between 1722 and 1745 by Christopher Wren, Nicholas Hawksmoor, and John James. The magnificent Henry VII Chapel, a masterpiece of late Gothic architecture, was built from 1503 to 1519. Since William the Conqueror, all coronations of English and British monarchs have taken place in Westminster Abbey.
