Westerburg Castle

Westerburg Castle, first documented in 1192 but probably built earlier, is located in the town of Westerburg in the Westerwald region and is based on a castle complex from the 12th century. This initially belonged to the Counts of Leiningen and came into the possession of the Lords of Runkel at the beginning of the 13th century through the marriage of Siegfried III of Runkel with a daughter from the House of Leiningen. In the first half of the 13th century, the castle became the seat of the Lords of Westerburg, who finally split off from the House of Runkel no later than 1288 with Heinrich I of Westerburg.

The castle was significantly expanded and rebuilt over time and was for a long time the residence of a branch of the Counts of Leiningen-Westerburg. The northeast corner and the north front of the complex are likely the oldest sections still existing today. They contain the castle chapel and probably date from the early 13th century. The building housing the great hall was completed between 1476 and 1483. The other existing parts of the complex date from the 18th century.

Today, the castle is privately owned and houses a restaurant and a dental practice.
