Weißfrauenkloster (auch Neumünster oder Maria-Magdalena-Kloster)

Administrative seat

The Weißfrauenkloster, also known as Neumünster or Maria-Magdalena-Kloster, was a significant spiritual institution in Mainz, Rhineland-Palatinate. Originally founded as a refuge for women seeking a penitent life, it evolved into a Cistercian nunnery and shaped the city's religious and social fabric for centuries.

History+

The monastery was founded in 1252 for the Magdalenians, an order dedicated to repentance and monastic life. In 1291, there was a transition to the Cistercian Order, placing the monastery under the supervision of Eberbach Abbey. This affiliation subsequently determined its spiritual and organizational direction. The monastery existed until its dissolution in 1802, at which point 17 nuns still resided there. The monastery church was dismantled in 1812. The guesthouse, built in 1718, is the last remaining architectural testament to the former monastery and is now owned by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce.
