Weinberg Church
The Weinbergkirche “Zum Heiligen Geist” in Dresden-Pillnitz is a remarkable Baroque sacred building, picturesquely situated in the former Royal Vineyard. History+
The history of the Weinbergkirche began in 1723 when it was erected as a replacement for the demolished Pillnitz Palace Church. This church had to make way for the expansion of Pillnitz Palace. The construction of the new church was ordered by Augustus the Strong and supervised by Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann, the renowned architect of the Dresden Zwinger. The foundation stone was laid on June 24, 1723, and by November of the same year, the exterior construction was completed. The solemn consecration took place on November 11, 1725. Until 1918, the church served both the court and the community as a house of worship. After a long period of decay in the 20th century, the Weinbergkirche underwent extensive restoration in the 1990s and has since been restored to its former glory.
