Vogtturm (Kastnerturm) Castle

As early as 926, a tower is mentioned in Zell, which served as a bailiff's and refuge tower. It may have been built to protect a small monastery founded in 748. The current tower is much younger, but still the oldest secular building in the city. It was probably built in the 13th century by the Counts of Falkenstein or the Lords of Saalfelden.

Their successors, the Walcher, also come into question as builders. In the 14th century, the tower was owned by the Lords Hundt von Dorfheim, who enfeoffed the Goldegger with it. At that time, it belonged as an Urbargut to the free-owned Ansitz Dorfheim near Saalfelden and was used as a tithe barn or granary, but also as a prison. From the 17th century onwards, the owners changed quite frequently. In 1644, it was owned by Wolf Kheill. In 1719, Friedrich Ignaz Lürzer von Zehendtal acquired ownership of the tower through marriage. His descendants owned it until the land reform of 1848. The building is also known as Kastnerturm. This name goes back to Johann Kastner, who acquired the tower in 1866 and whose family it belonged to for almost a hundred years.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, it was predominantly used as a residential building. From 1951, Markus and Theresia Faistauer were the owners. Later, Bankhaus Spängler took over the building. Its ground floor has long been divided into commercial premises and rented out. The local history museum has been housed on four floors since 1984.
