The Wat Sibounheuang is a unique Buddhist monastery of the Theravada tradition, located in Altlußheim near Heidelberg in Baden-Württemberg. It is the only one of its kind in Germany founded and managed by Laotian immigrants, thus representing the Laotian expression of Theravada Buddhism.
History+
As early as the beginning of the 1990s, the Laotian community living in Germany wished to establish a Buddhist Wat. In May 1997, the Sibounheuang-Theravada-Buddhismus e. V. invited Ajahn Outhai Dhammiko from Laos to found the Wat Sibounheuang. Due to growing interest in this spiritual center, a suitable plot of land was acquired in Altlußheim in 2003. On August 7, 2003, the foundation stone for the monastery was ceremonially laid in the presence of nine Buddhist monks and approximately one hundred guests.

Today, Wat Sibounheuang serves as a place of encounter for people from diverse cultures. Abbot Ajahn Outhai Dhammiko offers spiritual guidance, instruction in Buddhist teachings, and introductions to Vipassana meditation. Important Buddhist festivals such as Makha Bucha, Visakha Bucha, and Khao Phansa are also celebrated at the monastery.
