Tatenhausen Castle

Tatenhausen moated castle is located in Tatenhausen Forest near Halle in the district of Gütersloh. For over 470 years, the castle was the ancestral seat of the Barons and Counts of Korff genannt Schmising. It was first mentioned in a document in 1491, when its owner was Knight Bernd Hoberg. From 1812 to 1816, the poet of the Hainbund, Friedrich Leopold zu Stolberg-Stolberg, lived in the moated castle.

The existing buildings were initially constructed in the Weser Renaissance style. The construction of the main house and the first east wing with wheel-crenellated gables and a stair tower began in 1540 on foundations from the 14th century, after the Korff-Schmising family acquired the property in 1524 (Heinrich Korff-Schmising was the son-in-law of the last Hoberg). The second east wing was added around 1671 along with the tower. In the early 1700s, the main entrance, the terrace, and the west wing were added in a simple Baroque style. The equally Baroque orangery was designed in 1751 by Johann Conrad Schlaun; it is not publicly accessible. The castle lake is fed by the Laibach stream.
