Freiling Castle

Freiling Water Castle is a historic building in Oftering-Freiling, Upper Austria. It was first mentioned in a document in 1170 and has undergone numerous changes throughout its history, from a medieval moated castle to a four-winged water castle. Today, only parts of the original complex remain, embedded in an extensive landscape park.
History+
The origins of Freiling Castle date back to 1170, when it was first mentioned as a moated castle in a document from Wilhering Abbey, its construction attributed to the Lords of Perg and Machland. For a long time, the complex was held as a fief by the Schifer family, until it passed to the Kauthen family in 1669. Under the Kauthens, the estate was rebuilt and embellished into a four-winged water castle. In the 19th century, it temporarily served as an asylum and later as an agricultural school. A fire in 1862 destroyed large parts of the castle, after which reconstruction proceeded slowly and was limited to the northern wing and a shortened tower. In the 20th century, it housed, among other things, a significant fly collection belonging to the amateur dipterologist Walter Peller.
