Gnemern Castle

Gnemern moated castle was built by Prince Borwin around 1218-1223 to protect the overland trade route between Rostock and Wismar. From 1661 until their forced expropriation and expulsion by the communists in 1945, it was owned by the von Meerheimb family. In 1676, a fire almost completely destroyed the moated castle. Between 1682 and 1685, a new manor house was built, which is one of the rare, almost unaltered early Baroque country houses in Mecklenburg. Since 2011, Helmut Freiherr von Maltzahn, who has already rebuilt the burned-down Ulrichshusen Castle as a hotel and saved Gützkow Castle from decay, has owned the property of his Meerheimb ancestors. As the new owner, he intends to renovate the building and its outdoor facilities, which are in need of repair.
