The Walhalla in Donaustauf, an impressive monument near Regensburg, is a hall of fame that has honored significant personalities of German tongue since 1842. History+
The idea for the Walhalla emerged during a period of national humiliation following defeats against Napoleon and the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire. Crown Prince Ludwig I of Bavaria decided as early as 1807 to erect a temple of honor for outstanding personalities of German language. He commissioned the creation of busts and, together with the historian Johannes von Müller, selected those to be honored. The foundation stone for the structure was laid in 1830, and after twelve years of construction, the Walhalla was opened in 1842. It is owned by the Free State of Bavaria and today commemorates 195 individuals, deeds, and groups through 130 busts and 65 memorial plaques. New admissions are decided by the Bavarian Council of Ministers.
