Geyso Castle

The two-story residential building of Geysosche Castle was presumably built around 1600. In 1710, Johann Leopold von Geyso (an old knightly family from Mansbach near Philippsthal) bought the estate in Roßdorf. Shortly thereafter, he added the tower to the front. The von Geysos inhabited the castle until the mid-19th century before it was sold in 1881 to the industrialist Wenzel from Alexisbad. He then sold the castle to the Prussian Minister of Commerce, von Berlepsch. During the great Roßdorf village fire in 1895, the castle was saved (unlike the neighboring von Wechmarsche Castle), but the outbuildings and farm buildings fell victim to the fire. In 1945, the owners were dispossessed and expelled by the communists. The castle housed the municipal administration, the library, and several apartments. After the reunification, a descendant of the v. Berlepschs got the castle back. It has stood empty until today, the exterior facade was restored in the mid-1990s. Meanwhile, a Dutch couple has bought the castle and has recently started extensive interior renovations to make the building habitable again as a residence.
