Vogelsberger Dom

House of worship

The Vogelsberger Dom, a listed church building in Unterreichenbach, a district of Birstein in the Main-Kinzig district of Hesse, is an outstanding example of Baroque sacred architecture. The church, popularly known as the “Vogelsberger Dom” due to its size, is characterized by its unusual transverse layout and the simple elegance of Reformed architecture.

History+

The current Baroque transverse church was built between 1748 and 1750 according to designs by Johann Wiesenfeld, executed by a student of Andrea Gallasini. It replaced a previous building, which served as a burial place for the patrons and had become so dilapidated that renovation was no longer considered worthwhile. The foundation stone for the new building was laid on April 27, 1748, and the solemn inauguration took place on October 18, 1750. Over the centuries, the structure underwent only minor changes. The original organ was replaced by a new instrument in 1877. Of the initially four bronze bells, three were melted down during the First World War and replaced in 1919. New bells were cast in 1958 to replace those surrendered during the Second World War.

Location+

The church is located in Unterreichenbach, a district of the municipality of Birstein in the Main-Kinzig district of Hesse, Germany. It is nestled in the landscape of the Vogelsberg.

On site+

Today, the Vogelsberger Dom serves as a place of worship for the Protestant parish of Unterreichenbach, which belongs to the Kinzigtal church district in the Hanau-Hersfeld deanery of the Evangelical Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck. The interior of the church is shaped by the principles of the Reformed church, featuring a central wooden altar, two-story galleries, and the absence of pictorial or sculptural representations. The square church tower with its multi-story spire is attached to the southern long side of the rectangular nave.
