Ursulinenkloster

The convent was founded around 1136 by Augustinian canonesses, who maintained a Romanesque church and a hospice for strangers. Emperor Frederick Barbarossa issued a letter of protection for the so-called Angerkloster in 1183. After 1200, the Magdalen nuns, also known as White Ladies, took over the convent until its dissolution during the Reformation in the 16th century. In 1667, Ursuline nuns occupied the vacant convent and continue to use it to this day, traditionally dedicating themselves to the education and upbringing of young girls, and later also children and adults. However, their work was repeatedly restricted by political circumstances, such as the Kulturkampf, the Nazi era, and the GDR era. The current Gothic convent church was rebuilt in the second half of the 13th century after a fire. It underwent several renovations and alterations over the centuries. A bombing raid in July 1944 completely destroyed the church; its reconstruction lasted until 1958. The convent buildings, whose rubble stone wall dates back to the founding period around 1136, were also expanded and baroque-styled multiple times. As the only Erfurt convent, the Ursuline Convent escaped secularization in Prussia in 1821. After the reunification, the buildings were extensively renovated, an achievement recognized with the Thuringian Heritage Protection Award.

The Ursuline Convent is located in the city of Erfurt in Thuringia, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 202 meters above sea level. It is situated directly in the center of Erfurt's Old Town.

The Ursuline Convent remains an active convent of the Ursuline nuns today. The convent church is used for services, and the community continues to dedicate itself to education and upbringing. The extensively renovated buildings house, among other things, the Catholic Edith-Stein-Schule. In the inner courtyard of the convent, gravestones of Erfurt patrician families are displayed.
