Schwarzes Kloster

The founding of the Freiburg Ursuline Convent took place in 1696, following efforts that began as early as 1667. The city of Freiburg and Bishop Marquard Rudolf von Rodt of Constance approved the establishment of the Society of Saint Ursula of Anne de Xainctonge, whose main focus was on girls' education. The first superior was Maria Cäcilia Hirt from Lucerne. Under her successor Maria Placida Sommervogel, and especially under Euphemia Dorer, who was elected superior twice, the Freiburg convent separated from the Lucerne mother house in 1709. During this period, after provisional accommodations, the current convent buildings and church were constructed. The convent suffered severe damage in 1744/45 due to the demolition of Vauban's fortifications, leading to the establishment of a branch in Staufen im Breisgau, which, however, had to close in 1777. Later, further foundations followed in Villingen (1782) and Breisach (1820). Under Superior Karoline Kaspar, who served from 1809 until her death in 1860, St. Ursula had approximately 500 students around 1810, making it one of the largest girls' schools in Baden. The convent survived secularization due to its significance for the community.

The Ursuline Convent is located in the Altstadt-Mitte district of Freiburg im Breisgau, a city in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It is situated at the corner of what are now Rathausgasse and Rotteckring.

The former convent church of St. Ursula and its sacristy are currently used by the Old Catholic community of Freiburg for worship. The other rooms of the historic complex house the adult education center (Volkshochschule).
