Ursulinenkloster Fritzlar

The origins of the convent date back to 1145, when a hospital for the poor was founded below the cathedral. By 1254 at the latest, this had developed into an Augustinian nunnery that operated the hospital. Between the 13th and 14th centuries, this convent built the Katharinenkirche, which still stands today. In 1538, the Augustinian convent was dissolved due to economic difficulties and the Reformation, and the buildings fell into disrepair. In 1700, Martha Hitz from Fritzlar initiated the revival of monastic life and girls' education through the Ursulines from Duderstadt. Ten years later, the Ursulines acquired the former Augustinian convent. In July 1711, the new convent was founded by three nuns from Metz, who also brought the first students with them. Initial difficulties, including language barriers and public mistrust, were overcome. In 1712, classes began for boarding students, and from 1718, an elementary school for girls from the town was also offered. Construction of the current convent building began in 1713 and was completed in 1719. It adjoined the Katharinenkirche to the west. The convent existed with two war-related interruptions (1877–1887 and 1941–1945) until 2003 and operated the Ursulinenschule Fritzlar from 1712 to 1989.
