The Ursuline Convent in Duderstadt, located in southern Lower Saxony, is a traditional sacred building that has played an important role in the education of young women since its founding in 1700. It is a place of contemplation and cultural exchange, whose history has been marked by changing times.

History+

The convent was founded in 1700 by Ursuline nuns from Erfurt with the aim of promoting the education of young girls in the northern Eichsfeld region. Between 1735 and 1740, the convent underwent a significant expansion. The current complex includes a convent building, the Liebfrauenkirche, which was newly constructed between 1889 and 1890, a guest area, and a garden. The convent buildings are built in timber-frame style. The convent was closed during the Kulturkampf from 1875 to 1887. During World War II, it served as a military hospital from 1941 to 1945. During renovation work on the Liebfrauenkirche in 2007, the remains of the founder and first superior, Mother Clara-Eugenia von Ebelsbach, were rediscovered and reinterred in the apse. In 2015, the convent was converted into a foundation.
