Ursulinen Abbey

The monastery was founded in 1660 at the initiative of Bishop Johann Philipp von Schönborn, who fulfilled a request from Countess Maria Hatzfeld. Ursuline nuns from Metz were called to Kitzingen to lead a new Catholic girls' school. Initially, the nuns found accommodation in a former Benedictine convent, which at the time was already dilapidated and had previously served as a Protestant women's collegiate church. Between 1686 and 1693, a new monastery complex including a church was built on this site, designed by Antonio Petrini. The nuns moved into the new buildings from 1693, and the consecration of the church to the Mother of God Mary by Johann Philipp von Greiffenclau took place on August 9, 1699. In the course of secularization, the monastery was dissolved in 1804. The church was acquired by Protestants in 1817 as their new city church and underwent renovations, including the addition of larger windows on the south side of the nave. The monastery buildings subsequently housed schools and teachers' residences. After significant war damage in 1945, the buildings were largely restored by 1950.

The former Ursuline Monastery is located in the city of Kitzingen in the federal state of Bavaria, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 199 meters above sea level.

The former monastery buildings currently house schools and teachers' residences. The church, once part of the monastery, has served as the Protestant city church since 1817.
