Unterhof Manor
The Unterhof Gilsa is a manor house with a stately home in Gilsa, a district of the municipality of Neuental in the Schwalm-Eder district of northern Hesse.
The complex is located immediately east of the patron church on the northern edge of the village. It was the ancestral seat of the "Gilsa-Unterhof" branch of the local noble family von und zu Gilsa, which divided into two large branches, "Gilsa-Oberhof" and "Gilsa-Unterhof", in the 16th century and built the two neighboring estates Oberhof and Unterhof next to the family's old moated castle, now called Mittelhof.
The Unterhof is a spacious courtyard complex enclosed on all four sides, with a manor house and farm buildings, and is still operated today as an agricultural business owned by the von und zu Gilsa family. The half-timbered manor house with a gabled dormer in the central axis was built around 1700; noteworthy is the horizontally divided and representatively carved front door from 1809.
Private Cemetery+
On the wooded slope north of the Unterhof, the Barons von und zu Gilsa established a private cemetery around 1920, with a monumental staircase and cemetery portal.
