Lower Castle Pähl
The Lower Castle is a manor house and one of originally three castles in Pähl in the Upper Bavarian district of Weilheim-Schongau.
Kaspar von Berndorf (also: Perndorfer, Berndorff), who acquired his properties in Pähl in 1531 from Urban Aresinger, probably had the castle built before the middle of the 16th century. It became the seat of an open Hofmark.
The following owners are mentioned: Heinrich von Berndorf (1589), Ottheinrich von Berndorf, his son Philipp Karl von Berndorf (1663), and his son Gottfried (1689). Gottfried's widow had to pledge the Hofmark to Dießen Abbey in 1722. Matheus Carl von Vieregg redeemed it in 1754 and united it with the Hofmark Tutzing. The property remained in this family until the death of Maximilian Graf von Vieregg, the last male Vieregg. In 1866, his sister Ilka von Wrede inherited it. The Lower Castle then remained with the Wrede family for almost 140 years.
After its sale, since 2005, it has been possible to rent rooms for corporate and private events. Since then, the building has been the venue for exhibitions, weddings, conferences, and a backdrop for film and photo shoots.
Description+
The Lower Castle is located in the middle of the village. It is a three-story rectangular building and essentially presents itself in its original architectural form. Only the small corner turrets are no longer present today. A sketch of the building around 1560 exists in a drawing by Philipp Apian. Michael Wening created a copper engraving around 1700.
The rooms contain simple architectural elements such as stucco moldings, coves, or carved balusters in the staircase.
The Lower Castle is surrounded by a park of about two hectares.
